In this part of the series dedicated to the American carrier-based Wildcat fighter, we will take a closer look at the service of the US Navy air force units armed with Grumman F4F-3 and F4F-3A in the Pacific during the initial phase of the war with Imperial Japan. On the fateful 7th of December 1941, two such squadrons were serving there, VF-3 stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) with F4F-3 aircraft and VF-6 deployed from the USS Enterprise (CV-6) and operating mainly F4F-3As. In January, the VF-42 squadron appeared in the Pacific, stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) and again armed with F4F-3 aircraft. At that time, the VF-2 squadron, originally operating with Brewster F2A-3 Buffalos from the carrier USS Lexington (CV-2), was also re-equipped with Grumman F4F-3As in Pearl Harbor. The men and machines of these units were involved in a number of combat actions. At first exclusively defensive, and from February 1942 increasingly offensive, in which the American carrier air force attacked the advanced bases of the Imperial Navy.
